"Meeting many new people and learning new things have changed me from a team player to that of an active & innovative leader."

Why Hitotsubashi ICS’s EMBA program?

It offers a part-time EMBA program to get an MBA within a year while continuing my career. To move up the corporate ladder, I was looking for opportunities to acquire business management skills. I thought Hitotsubashi ICS was a great platform to achieve my objectives.

What was the most memorable moment during your EMBA?

It was the immersion program in Silicon Valley. I was impressed by the great culture of having professional networks at Silicon Valley and various other things, such as the art of entrepreneurship and risk-taking. It has cultural diversity, and having close proximity facilitates finding synergy among stakeholders.

What would you say were the 3 key lessons from the program?

  • Personal transition: Meeting many new people and learning new things have changed me from a team player to that of an active & innovative leader.
  • Professional network: The new relationships I've built are exceptional. This will be key to career success.
  • The importance of sustainable development :It is important to secure future economic and business growth rather than just focusing on profit. If that happens, then eventually sustainability and profitability can co-exist.

How did the EMBA program impact your career?

This program helped me a lot to change my mindset to see things from broader and different perspectives. I have been able to enhance my business, finance, and marketing skills through this program. The things I learned related to digital disruption and the managerial skills I've gained helped me a lot for the new challenge I received at my company right after graduation.

"My proposal in capstone project was approved by my company, and I had moved to a new department to make it happen as the project lead"

Hitotsubashi ICS EMBA Alumnus Issei

Why Hitotsubashi ICS’s EMBA program?

I wanted to study business in a systematic way that would improve my team’s professional performance and give me a comprehensive understanding of business. I was looking for a school with an excellent faculty, internationality, and minimum impact on my career.

What was the most memorable moment during your EMBA?

It was the immersion trip to Silicon Valley. I attended all sessions online from Tokyo due to my visa issue. I was amazed by all the support from Hitotsubashi ICS. I could join the trip as if I were there, and I could learn a lot from the sessions.

What would you say were the 3 key lessons from the program?

  • Primary role of top management is to create a culture : Culture decides the sustainability of a company and can be created only by the top management.
  • Starting with "Why": Starting a business with “why” helps achieve sustainable profits. A business with social values will result in financial profit.
  • A realistic business idea is fundamentally important: When we pitched our business idea to investors and venture capitalists in Silicon Valley, I was surprised that they thought highly of our realistic ideas, as I had a rather weak image of Silicon Valley. That session made me re-recognize the importance of business basics.

How did the EMBA program impact your career?

My proposal in capstone project was approved by my company, and I had moved to a new department to make it happen as the project lead. So the EMBA program had a big impact on my career. More importantly, I have created this business idea with the mindset of "why", as I learned in this program. As the project progresses, this purpose-oriented mindset has spread throughout our team, which is rewarding. Such a mindset is the key for corporate sustainability, which is typically lacking in my company.

Advice to “Kohai” or future EMBAs

The best advantage of attending Hitotsubashi ICS EMBA is the small size of the class. You will find lifetime mentors and friends, so why don't you knock on the door?
