MBA Exchange Experience at Yale SOM: Insights from Christy Wang

Written by Jingjing Wang (Christy) | Nov 10, 2025 10:14:59 PM

Jingjing Wang (Christy), MBA Class of 2023, during her MBA journey at Hitotsubashi ICS, had the invaluable opportunity to spend a term at the Yale School of Management (SOM) as an exchange student. Building on her previous experience during the Global Network Week at Yale SOM, she was eager to return and further immerse herself in its inspiring academic and multicultural environment. This exchange allowed Christy to explore her passion for social entrepreneurship, connect with exceptional peers from around the world, and gain firsthand insight into life and learning in the United States.

Why did you choose Yale?

For the Global Network Week (GNW), I chose Yale and had a wonderful experience there. After that, I was eager to spend a full term at Yale to enjoy its
world-class lectures and highly diverse environment, where I could exchange ideas and collaborate with exceptional peers from around the world.

My long-term career goal is to establish my own business that creates a positive social impact. At ICS, I have taken many excellent courses that cover most of the essential MBA curricula; however, I was eager to learn more specifically about how to launch and grow a social enterprise. Introduced by a double-degree student, Eri Jibiki (Class of 2022), I learned that Yale offers a course called Social Innovation Starter. This opportunity strongly motivated me to join Yale and deepen my understanding of social entrepreneurship.

Lastly, as a student, I wanted to take the opportunity to travel and gain a deeper understanding of the United States.

How did you prepare for the exchange program?

I visited New Haven during the Global Network Week (GNW). Based on the suggestion of last year’s exchange student, Qianyi Ye (Class of 2022), I planned early to secure accommodation in East Rock, a relatively safe and popular residential area. In addition, it was essential to complete the required vaccinations and obtain the necessary certificates before departure. For transportation, other Yale students recommended using the Yale Shuttle, which is free of charge and has several routes that cover most residential areas near the campus.

What are you studying at Yale SOM?

There is a course bidding system at Yale before each term begins. Fortunately, I successfully enrolled in Social Innovation Starter, Inequality & Social Mobility, Policy Design, and 5 other courses. The Social Innovation Starter class was taught by Professor Teresa Chahine, a leading expert in social entrepreneurship and systems innovation. Through interactive discussions with inclusive classmates, Professor Chahine encouraged us to think critically about how to create sustainable and scalable social impact.

Inequality & Social Mobility was a particularly impressive course that explored both existing and potential inequalities in the United States. The discussions were lively, and both local and international students openly shared their own studies and life experiences. I was honored to receive a High Honors grade in this course, which made me even more engaged and motivated.

Like ICS, the course included assignments such as readings, essays, and group presentations. These tasks helped me develop closer connections with classmates who had positive attitudes and distinct perspectives.

What was your best memory during the exchange program?

The Sterling Memorial Library, built in 1931, is an architectural masterpiece often referred to as the Cathedral of Learning. Its interior is truly magnificent and rich in artistic value. Especially on a fall afternoon, when you visit the Starr Reading Room, sunlight streams through the beautiful stained-glass windows, filling the space with a bright, warm, and inspiring atmosphere that encourages students to focus on their studies.

I particularly enjoyed studying there before exams. Although it can get crowded at times, seeing so many students studying seriously motivates you to work harder. The room is very quiet, with only the sounds of typing on keyboards and writing in notebooks. Surrounded by thousands of old books, you can’t help but feel inspired to learn and absorb knowledge.

Any students’ activities?

There were many student-led activities held throughout the term, such as the Harvard–Yale Game Watch, Apple picking, and Pumpkin decorating. One of the major events in December was the Winter Stroll Program, where all students gathered in the courtyard to enjoy music, beer, and conversations with peers. Various drinks and foods were provided, and the courtyard was transformed into a magical place—mysterious, lively, beautiful, and warm. Although winters in New Haven can be harsh, this event encouraged students to embrace the season and stay motivated in their studies.

Do you suggest that students choose the Exchange Program for the 2nd-year activity?

I would recommend that students participate in the exchange program to experience different cultures and lectures, as well as to expand their networks with peers. My career perspectives also broadened through conversations with talented classmates from various industries. The program not only helps you deepen your learning but also motivates you to challenge yourself through discussions and group work with highly driven and diverse peers. It is truly well worth applying for and completing such a program.
